about

A quick project — it was composed and recorded in 4 hours, from 9pm to 1am July 8-9, 2014, and the finished version posted online by 10am — this 43-minute track was inspired by my run in the “Hog Jog” 5-mile race in Austin, Minnesota over the previous weekend. Until this race I had always run with music. but on this date I had forgotten to bring my headphones. Forced to turn the sounds of my breathing and footsteps into music to propel me onward, I devised a simple rhythmic and melodic pattern that forms the backbone of this piece of music. Mixing ambient, minimalist electronica and electro-funk, this album reflects the influence of Pink Floyd, Brian Eno and Tangerine Dream, without sounding like it’s from the 1970s. (I hope.)

This album became my go-to running soundtrack for months after I recorded it, but the more I listened, the less satisfied I was with the mix. It was too dense, too bass-heavy, and over-compressed. So 11 months after it was recorded, I went back to the Logic project and tweaked, and tweaked, and tweaked… x6. The sixth version of the remix is now available, and accompanied by new photographs from locations in Austin that the tracks were named after.
